Wukich, D & Tuason, D (2011), ‘Diagnosis and treatment of chronic ankle pain’, Instr Course Lect., 60, pp:335-50.

The authors of the above article suggest that one in 5 sprains leads to chronic ankle pain (and that often, people don’t recall the initial trauma behind the chronic pain). This is even more of a reason to get adequate treatment for sprains and strains when they initially occur, as this may help to prevent more pain in the future!

Vive Health Naturopaths recommend the following products for Strains and Sprains:

Products Suggested Dosage
1. Brauer Arnica Pillules or Tablets

Adult: 2-4 pillules under tongue every 1/2 hr for the first 4 doses. Then, 2-4 pillules every 4 hours.

Child: 1-2 pillules under the tongue every 1/2 hr for the first 4 doses. Then 1-2 pillules every 4 hours.

2. Herbs of Gold Quercetin Complex (60 tabs) 1 cap x 2 daily until swelling goes down.
3. Traumeel Tablets (50 Tabs) Adults and children 6yr + - 1 tab dissolved under tongue x 3 daily. Infants and children to 6 years: 1/2 the adult dose.
4. Traumeel Cream (50g) Apply generously to affected area and reapply as necessary.
5. Schuessler Tissue Salts Ferr Phos (First Aid) 4 tabs x 3 daily before meals,
6. Martin & Pleasance Comfrey Cream (100g) Apply generously to affected area and reapply as necessary.
7. Schuessler Tissue Salts Calc Fluor (100 Tabs) 4 tabs x 3 daily before meals.
8. Zen Therapeutics Tincture (50ml) Massage into area 3 x daily or as needed.
9. Tigerbalm Red Ointment (18g) Massage into area 3 x daily or as needed.
